Open Educational Resources (OER) in GEES

Sharing and Reusing Educational Resources in the GEES Disciplines - HE Academy / JISC Open Educational Resources Programme

An OER is an educational resource that permits free use, re-use, and development by others for teaching. OER are released under an open licence e.g. Creative Commons. This allows you to licence your material so that you keep copyright but allow other people to copy and distribute your work on the conditions you specify.

The GEES subject Centre ran three OER projects between 2009 and 2011:

C-change in GEES: Open Licensing of Climate Change and Sustainability Resources in the Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The C-change in GEES Project was a pilot that explored the open licensing of climate change and sustainability resources in the disciplines of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES). This project was backed by a consortium of 3 professional bodies and 7 partner institutions with the GEES Subject Centre as lead partner. The C-change Project realized genuine benefits to our subjects and other discipline communities through the open licensing of a significant body of resources on climate change and sustainability, and through the seeding of a community of practice (CoP). The outputs are accessible, high quality and should be an inspiration to colleagues considering developing OER.

The resources created can be accessed through JorumOpen and partner institution repositories, as well as web 2.0. In addition to the resources themselves the project has created case studies of practice, example workflows and procedures on the legal and technical aspects of OER published as guidelines for practitioners.
