The GEES disciplines

The Geography, Earth & Environmental Science (GEES) Subject Centre provides professional development activities and services for all those who teach and support learning in the three subject areas. This includes graduate teaching assistants, lecturers and support staff such as lab technicians, cartographers, subject administrators and librarians.

The majority of our activities are inclusive of all three disciplines including publications, on-line resources (this website and Resource Database), events, projects and Funding for learning and teaching research and development. Although in many institutions the disciplines are located in separate departments or schools, the boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred and many departments are merging and/or engaging in inter-disciplinary teaching.

We feel that it is important to encourage the sharing of ideas between the three disciplines and, at the same time, recogonize their distinctive priorities and needs. To this end, as well as offering inter-disciplinary activities, the Subject Centre also provides for the individual disciplines through the services of its three Senior Advisors and active links to the relevant professional bodies and subject associations. In addition, each discipline and professional body / subject association is represented on our Advisory Board.

Discipline specific information is available on the following web pages:

We maintain a mailing list of departmental contacts for all institutions that teaching geography, earth or environmental sciences at undergraduate and postgraduate level (including HE in FE) across the UK. This ensures that all interested colleagues are informed of our activities and services, and that relevant publications and information from ourselves and other appropriate projects and organisations may be widely disseminated. We also maintain a 'jiscmail' announcement list, a low-volume moderated news and information service. You will receive news of events, support activities, resources and publications, as well as funding opportunities, as they arise. To view the archives, join or leave this list, go to http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/GEES.html

An agreement has been made with the three major professional bodies in the UK; the RGS-IBG, Geological Society and Insitution of Environmental Sciences; that colleagues may count participation in GEES Subject Centre activities towards their CPD for chartered status.
