5th December 2000 - C & IT in Fieldwork Teaching Conference
This event took place at the University of Leeds on 29th November 2000. Attended by 50 delegates, the conference aimed to demonstrate good practice and provide a forum for some of the issues raised by the use of C & IT in fieldwork. Six pieces of work were demonstrated ranging from the small-scale implementation of software within a department to large-scale development of software suites available to all Higher Education Institutions. In his keynote address, Tom Franklin of the LTSN Technologies Centre, spoke of the importance of C & IT in the curriculum and accessibility in the design of these resources. A prevailing theme throughout the day was that technology is a tool, which can be used as an important enhancement for fieldwork teaching but should not be used as a substitute for the real thing! The proceeding of this event will be published in the near future in a special edition of Planet.
24th November 2000 - Call for Environmental Science Innovators
Do you (or any of your colleagues) have a 'good idea' for assessment in Environmental Sciences learning and teaching that you have tried, or are thinking of trying out, with students? It could be an idea for an innovative examination; an idea for assessing teamwork; a novel assignment; developing assessment criteria.
If so, we would like you to consider presenting your good idea at the:
GOOD ASSESSMENT IDEAS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES LEARNING & TEACHING 'SWAP SHOP'
where you can benefit from discussions with other innovators which may help you to develop your idea to a greater level of detail or in a valuable new direction.
The 'Swap Shop' is hosted by the Committee of Heads of Environmental Sciences (CHES) in association with the LTSN Subject Centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (LTSN-GEES). It takes place at the University of Kingston, Surrey on Friday, 23rd of February 2001 between 10.00 and 15.30. The cost will be 30 which includes refreshments and lunch.
20th October 2000 - 'Planet' coming to a desktop near you!
The LTSN Subject Centres' own publication, 'Planet', will be published for the start of the new year. Whilst every department will receive a paper copy it is also our intention to publish Planet as a portable document format (pdf) file available for free download from this web-site to your desktop computer. The first edition will be carrying various articles from the GEES community as well as news and views from the Subject Centre. A call for future papers and details of how to submit will also be included.
11th October 2000 - Departmental Workshops
Would your department welcome support with a particular area of learning and teaching?
Note: Details of workshop topics from this time are no longer available.
The Subject Centre is committed to enhancing learning and teaching in the three disciplines by supporting staff both nationally and within their own institutions. Experience has shown that small-scale, departmental workshops are particularly effective and the Subject Centre is pleased to offer such a service to Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences departments throughout the UK.
The half-day workshops will run during the period from December 2000 to July 2001. If you wish to request a workshop for this period please submit your form by November 10th 2000. There are a limited number of workshops which we can run and allocation will be on a first-come first served basis.
