Introduction

Rationale

Field trips are expensive and students have a limited time in the field. One obvious rationale of a field trip is to expose students to new environments. It is axiomatic then that their knowledge of these environments will be limited. A computer based simulation allows the student to build a knowledge base and carry out a field exercise which will impart data collection skills and facilitate the identification of species in the field before undertaking work in the field

Field - Sim The Ecology of the Maltese Islands.

The Ecology of the Maltese Islands Field-Sim package is a natural extension of materials already developed at Plymouth to support fieldwork in the Mediterranean. Notably, the website Environmental themes in the Mediterranean and the Geology and Hydrology of Malta the latter being a simulated field project used to prepare students for Mediterranean fieldwork.

Aims

To introduce the student to the ecology of the Maltese Islands and permit the student to carry out simulated or virtual fieldwork.

To simulate data collection and species identification in the field.

To give students the opportunity to acquire field work, identification, data analysis and interpretative skills before going into the field.>>next
