Levin's measure of niche breadth
Biodiversity is often referred to as species diversity and measured by the number of species in an area - the species richness.
Assessment of species richness is usually based on a sample taken from the population. See example opposite.
Inula crithmoides (Golden Samphire) has a high score (B = 3.341) and hence occupies a broad niche and is termed a generalist species.
To standardise this index of niche breadth Levin's standardised measure of niche breadth should be calculated.
