Small or medium sized deciduous tree, rarely exceeding 10m. Leaves palmate. Flowers small and enclosed in the fruit which can be round, oval, pale green, yellow, black, dark purple or of mixed hues.
Grows in maquis and on disturbed ground. Also grows on rock faces cliffs and walls and fortifications. Introduced by the first human settlers. Common.
