About the Subject Centre
The purpose of the GEES Subject Centre is to promote and support high quality learning and teaching across the disciplines of geography, earth and environmental sciences in UK higher education (including HE in FE). Based at the University of Plymouth, the GEES Subject Centre is a national and international hub for the exchange of knowledge on learning and teaching across the three disciplines. It provides a voice for the discipline communities, contributing to government consultations and policy developments. The Centre has a UK-wide brief and this is reflected in the locations of its activities and events.
The nature of GEES Subject Centre reflects that of its constituent disciplines. It takes an active / experiential learning approach to its activities which include:
- Conferences
- Departmental workshops
- An annual Early Career Lecturers' Workshop
- Project funding
- On-line Resources
- Publications including our journal, Planet
- Support for the individual disciplines
- And much more, including email discussion lists and newsletters
Colleagues from the discipline communities (including academics, support staff and students) have opportunities to participate in the Centre’s work at a variety of levels. We take an inclusive and developmental approach to all our work. the Subject Centre is more than its core team: It is a network that involves all those who learn, teach or support learning in the GEES disciplines; we learn from our experiences and those of others and endeavour to remain abreast of all the key initiatives and changes in UK higher education as they relate to our disciplines. Everything we do is in support of the professional development of staff and the enhancement of student learning in geography, earth and environmental sciences in UK higher education.
